The long-lasting evolution of the Dinarides, involving multiple phases of intense tectonics produced numerous synorogenic basins. In such basins, where details regarding geological events are often obscured by tectonothermal overprinting, dismemberment and erosion, clastic material represents an indispensable source of information. Today, situated along the Internal and External Dinarides boundary, remnants of the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene basin system extend from the Alpine-Dinaride transitional area in Slovenia and Croatia, continuing through Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. An adequate dating, geochronological and geochemical data, as well as biostratigraphic data would provide reliable constraints on the major tectonic phases and the resulting paleogeographic changes. Sedimentary evolution of Late Cretaceous deep-water basins in the Dinarides (SECret) is a Slovenian-Croatian bilateral project. The main aim of the Croatian team is to gather data from siliciclastic, calciclastic and pelagic-hemipelagic deposits focused on provenance and stratigraphy to provide an understanding of the basin system evolution in space and time, particularly the interaction between major tectonic events and basin evolution, changes in climate and sediment supply, as well as resulting paleogeography.
