As reservoir sedimentation is rapidly progressing on a global scale, intensified and better adapted monitoring of sediment accumulation is needed to design optimal counter measures. In this talk, different methods on how to assess the siltation status of reservoirs are represented. Different techniques are described in case studies, including topographic differencing as the most widely used method. Examples of sub-bottom profiling, dynamic free-fall penetrometer measurements, and long sediment coring are presented.
The talk will also address state-of-the-art developments in sediment und sub-bottom detection methods for gravel pit lakes and how the results can be applied in the economy.
