While the stress field in the Earth’s crust is invisible, it affects numerous processes shaping the Earth’s surface depending on how the rocks respond to the stresses they undergo. Among others the stress field controls the evolution of faults and their kinematic behaviour which in turn can lead to rotation and perturbation of the stress field, strain accumulation, seismicity, surface deformation and associated sedimentation.
In this talk I present a modelling approach aiming at a representation of both the stress field and kinematics of an area. Some examples of how stresses, kinematics, seismicity and sedimentation are interlinked are shown from studies in northwest Türkiye and the southernmost Black Forest / northern Molasse Basin area.
