Stratigraphic correlation of lateral continuous facies using computer-assisted multi-well correlation

  • In this work, we use sequence stratigraphic interpretations along wells to generate multiple stratigraphic models of facies in the southern margin of Paratethys using WeCo (a computer-assisted stratigraphic multi-well correlation software developed by the RING Consortium). The input data of the stratigraphic well correlation are well data interpreted corresponding to the rock description (lithology), the thickness of stratigraphic units and their geological age. The principle of correlation used to constrain computer-assisted correlation simulations states that “laterally continuous facies interpreted in one well are only associated with the same laterally continuous interpreted facies in the other wells, and not with other stratigraphic interpretations”. It means that several facies correspond to lateral continuous units and form vertical barriers for stratigraphic correlation. The outcomes of the computer-assisted stratigraphic correlation are confronted to biostratigraphic interpretations along wells, and to additional wells of the zone of interest not used as constrain data during the correlation process.
