In this talk, we present reliable coarse-scale strategies for the simulation of (simplified) geophysical processes. Based on the finite element method, we construct appropriate multiscale methods for spatial approximations, discuss possible time discretization schemes for faster computations, and motivate extensions to more involved equations.
