  • Carbonates are widespread in the geologic record and can be related both to biogenic as well as inorganic formation. Precipitation conditions can be inferred from various geothermometers, however, may require assumptions about the initial carbonate-forming fluid or could be influenced by vital effects. In addition, diagenesis may overprint the original geochemical and isotopic signals. Clumped isotope geochemistry provides now the opportunity to directly determine the formation temperature (without assumptions) and can be used to assess diagenetic overprint. Case examples from travertines, vein calcites, stalagmites and biogenic carbonates will be discussed.
